Radical Innovation for Sustainability: The Power of Strategy and Open Innovation

Sustainability oriented innovation continues to garner increasing attention as the answer to how firms may improve environmental and/or social performance while simultaneously finding competitive advantage. Radically innovating new products and services to replace harmful market incumbents is central to this thesis, yet studies to date have found it to be a highly expensive process with high degrees of uncertainty and risk. Extant research however has largely neglected to examine the details of the actual product innovation process itself and has under appreciated the influence of corporate strategic context. Our paper addresses this gap in the literature through an in-depth case study of a sustainability oriented innovation process for a radical new product within a multinational life sciences company, DSM. Our findings identify five critical organizational practices through which strategic direction has enabled the innovation process: technology super-scouting throughout the value chain, search heuristics that favor radical sustainability solutions, integration of sustainability performance metrics in product development, championing the value chain to build demand for radical sustainability oriented product innovation, and harnessing the benefits of open innovation.

Predicting job offer acceptance of professionals in Taiwan: The case of the technology industry

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is defined as a firm's behavior that goes beyond its economic interest to benefit stakeholders and is a critical factor for business organizations to implement in order to successfully increase the job offer acceptance of job applicants. This research examines such job offer acceptance by developing a model based on the social signaling theory and expectancy theory. The hypotheses of this research were empirically tested using the data from professional job applicants at three well-known career fairs for the high-tech industry in Taiwan. The test results show that business practice CSR engagement and recruitment procedural justice positively affect both career success expectation and a firm's attractiveness, which consequently influence job offer acceptance. At the same time, due to its insignificant effect on career success expectation, philanthropic CSR engagement only has a significant impact on a firm's attractiveness. The findings of this research complement prior studies by presenting how business practice CSR engagement, philanthropic CSR engagement, and recruitment procedural justice should be simultaneously taken into account to boost job offer acceptance. Lastly, managerial implications and limitations are provided.

Technology foresight has been increasingly undertaken by developing countries to identify technologies whose adoption might serve as a platform for future economic growth. However, foresight activities have not, by and large, resulted in well-developed policy initiatives. Three factors are relevant for improvement. First, foresight activities would benefit from being more informed by the convergence literature and global convergence experience over the past several decades, and should therefore incorporate organically the concepts of absorptive capacity and technology gap into foresight exercises. Second, certain preconditions – in particular the existence of a functional national innovation system – enhance the likelihood that foresight exercises will be successful. Third, in order to achieve wide buy-in and promote the sustainability of initiatives generated by the foresight activity, developing countries are advised to consult widely in the foresight process. Policies emanating from foresight activities should additionally address two core challenges: a) a clear definition of those technologies that should be developed internally vs. those that should be sourced from abroad and b) identification of the internal capabilities to be developed in conjunction with those technologies targeted for acquisition from abroad.
